ABOUT
who we are
We are a women-run and women-owned business based in Yangon that seeks to provide self defense training to individuals and communities that need it.
We provide training through community defense classes at a number of locations in the city, through public awareness demonstrations, and through on-site training for businesses and organizations.
Our goal is to have people of all genders, ages, and sexualities achieve the strength, safety, and self-confidence to thrive in a modern Myanmar by combating harassment, assault, abuse, and bullying of any kind.
ACTIVITIES
what we do
COMMUNITY CLASSES
Basic Self Defense
Our curriculum is aimed to teach people the basic mental and physical moves necessary to defend themselves against potential attackers and harassers. It will arm women with practical martial knowledge, knowledge of legal procedure and laws, and knowledge of their bodies.
The law and sexuality classes are both taught by respective professionals in their fields, whereas the self defense classes are taught by our qualified in-house trainers. When students complete the sparring session on the final day, they are presented with a certificate of
participation. We try to create a space that is supportive and welcoming to women of all ages, backgrounds, and sexual orientations.
PUBLIC AWARENESS
Activating Social Change
MWSDC makes a strong commitment to justice and social change by engaging in awareness campaigns alongside other women's organizations.
We participated in the Safe Cities for Women campaign by ActionAid, provided training for the Political Empowerment Program of the Women’s League of Burma, and have collaborated with Triangle Women’s Support Group and Strong Flowers in launching the Women’s Desire campaign in public venues all over Yangon.
We continue to seek opportunities to engage with and support other women's groups and organizations in our work.
ON-SITE TRAINING
We'll Come to You
We create packages for businesses, schools, and organizations who want to include this course in their various training programs and curricula.
Our program is designed to help women develop the toolkit necessary to stand up for themselves in difficult situations, especially involving harassment and workplace discrimination. We also encourage women to stand up for each other through a thorough bystander intervention program, to become better advocates for themselves and their colleagues and friends.
